The end of this first journey

Those 10 weeks gave me the opportunity to challenge myself and improve my skills. Now I can proudly say that I am a Bitmap Master, a Dinosaur’s expert and a good researcher!

I really enjoyed all the research that I made, I didn’t expect it to be fun! All those projects were a totally new experience and I never worked in this way in my previous course. Meeting new people from all over the world and have the opportunity to work with them definitely helped me to improve my team work skills.

The environment at AUB is just fantastic, everyone is so nice and available to help you. There is also a totally crazy atmosphere which makes me feel at home… Now I am not the only strange person but we can be strange all together!

I made mistakes, but thanks to my tutors I was able to correct them, improve my work and learn.

Bitmap helped me to summarize my thoughts about this first journey.

I am so glad to be a student at AUB and I really believe I will learn even more in my next journey. I can’t wait to start it!

Think outside the box

”Think outside the box!”

Those are the words which took us to the new project.

I had a completely new experience, we had to listen to an article and write words with our eyes closed, so that our feelings and honest opinions could come out. It is really impressive how you can pick up things without seeing any visuals. It made me feel as if the event happened to me.

At the beginning of the project, I wanted to work in Italian and say my opinion about our current situation. I listened to the news that just came out and to some adverts as well.

The video was about immigration, the landing of new immigrants in the south part of Italy. After the description of the event, the journalist interviewed some Italians and immigrants as well.

Those are the words that I managed to write whilst listening to the news and adverts.

Brainstorming brainstorming

After analysing my words I did a more conscious brainstorm about immigration and what Italians think about it.

I had a chat with my dad to find out what he thought, and it terrified me. Italians are currently feeling really threatened by immigrants, even if they don’t have to be.

I then had a look at some other sources online but they basically had the same as my father’s point of view. Maybe because of the Italian journalism corruption.

Here there are the Italian articles that I found:

Immigration Brainstorm

I then thought over my opinion, the different information from my sources and experimented on some of the words. As immigration is a worldwide phenomenon I decided to work in English, which is the most spoken language nowadays.

Experiment 1Experiment 1a

I first focus on the concept of immigration and reflected on the type the idea of moving from a different place with the help of acetate and collage using some magazines.

I also played with the word ‘racism’ and gave distance to the letters of different colors. I then used the verb ‘is’ to make a sentence out of the word.

Immigration Immigration

Still thinking about racism, I considered the idea that some people have about the color of your skin, as if it was something that you could choose in a clothes shop. I used the font from a famous clothes branding and created an imaginary interview with 2 stereotypes.

I also analyzed the concept of ‘Wall of smoke’: currently in Italy politicians are using immigration as an excuse to manipulate people, distort the reality and hide the curropt system.

I made the main question on matt paper and then I placed it on white paper so you will be able to see the real problems only if you really analyze what is hiding.

Wall of smokeWall of smoke

From another totally different and more positive point of view, immigration is changing, transform, building something new with cultural integration.

Inspired by children books, I made an acetate booklet with a different culture on each page. A single page doesn’t look really interesting, but then all together they create a city.

Immigration book

After my tutor’s suggestions I worked on Illustrator on the best working idea.

I chose a Bold San Serif font and I worked on the colors and spacing. As the classic stereotypes of skin are white and black I used those colors plus a bright red to get the reader’s attention on ‘Is Alive’. I was not really satisfied with it and the colors remind me of Kinder so I went to get some chocolate.

After analyzing and experimenting I decided that I would focus on dealing with the concept of racism in relation to immigration.

To get some inspiration for my work and learn more about typography, I borrowed this book from the library and I actually found really interesting designs.

What is typography?

The one that most captured my attention was ‘The periodic table of emotions’. I think is great the idea of using just a table to express how essential and various emotions are, not using even a picture.

The Periodic Table of Emotions

The problem was now if I was going to face immigration worldwide or just in Italy.

Not sure about how to meet my goal, I did some research to find out how to best do my project.

First, I did some research about how different nationalities refer to different ethnicities and I found an amazing database of worldwide words.

I selected some of those words and then I realized a draft of my idea from the tutorial, a list of all the different races with the final word that links them all together: HUMANS.

I played around with different kinds of fonts (keeping human Bold and San Serif) and colors, and those are the results:

I then faced the concept referring just to Italy.

First I had a chat with British and Italians. I thought also about my opinion and then I listened some of the Italian traditions such as food, art, football and religion. I placed those words within the Italian shape, with a border that separate the country from the outside.

The border would be made by comments from Italians about Immigration.

Italian culture

In order to do that, I had a look at different Social Media to find out comments and opinions from different people and I found some horrible racist comments that really impressed me. I printed them out and translate them.

Comments   Comments

I was scared by these comments and they made me ask loads of questions.

”Why are people so aggressive on Social Media?!”

I then started my research and found amazing results.

This part of my research really made me speechless so I decided to direct my final work on the topic of Social Media and how people behave on them.

Social Media research

I looked at various sources to find out interesting information about why people are so aggressive on Social Media. Here there are some comments that captured my attention:

”We become passive so it is easy to comment, Social Networks are like a reality show and people want to show themselves”

Anonymity is a powerful force, Hiding behind a fake screen name makes us feel invincible, as well as invisible. We’re less inhibited online because we don’t have to see the reaction of the person we’re addressing, it’s harder to see and focus on what we have in common, we tend to dehumanize each other. When posting, people are thinking their comments to be tiny and like it was a game, no consequences.”

”People feel safe and use Social Networks as a weapon. Aggressive comments attract other people to do the same

”The research comes amid increasing evidence that young people are becoming increasingly narcissistic, and obsessed with self-image and shallow friendships.”

When isolated in their vehicle, people don’t feel connected to the drivers around them and become angrier and more aggressive. You’re even more isolated from the people you insult on social media and it can be difficult for people to remember that there are actual human being on the receiving end of those insults.

After finding all that information I made an experiment and went on Facebook to read two random posts in an open group and I analyzed the progress of the comments. The dynamics actually confirmed what my sources studied: Aggressive behaviors attract people to do the same and install a process that Social users feel like a game.

Facebook comment dynamics

I wanted to show the sense of a sequence in my design, giving importance to the dehumanization that Social Media causes.

So I thought, why not using a board game to show the comment’s sequence game that people play on Social Media?

The most popular Social Media is currently Facebook.

UK most popular Social Medias

One of the most common classic Board Games that everyone knows is the Goose name, ”Il Gioco Dell’Oca” in Italian. It is also the most antique Board Game.

Goose Game  Goose Game

I made out the structure of the game with illustrator using Facebook’s color scheme.

I worked out the question that I wanted to ask in the future:

”Will Social networks still exist in 2100? How are you using them?”

So I studied the typography styles of the text. Facebook’s body text font is a clear sans serif, Lucida Sans.

I then made out the board game using Facebook’s colors, fonts and icons, placing the aggressive comments that I found in my research.

The likes of the comments increase in each box.

I called the game ‘THE SOCIAL MEDIA GAME 2015’ and I added the personalized instructions.

Age: 7+
Players: ∞
You will need:
A Computer, Smartphone or Tablet Internet connection
A Social Media account for each player
How to play:
Write a post first. Wait for someone to comment and then reply with an aggressive comment. The more likes you get, the farther you can go. If people share, comment or like your post, just keep going.
The most likable and aggressive comment wins.

My question in the future

In one of the tutorials we made our first mock-up of the leaflet.

Happy with my poster, I started to play with the mock-up.

I thought about the process that people have to take to log in into a Social Network. First, you have to turn on your computer. Secondly, you will have to type your name and password. Finally, you will be successfully logged in into your account.

The most easy way to represent the first action was the icon of a power button. Then I used the classic template of a password input process. The computer’s screen would be then your reality.

To give sense to my poster, I then placed some key sentences about Social Media.

Here you have the very first final leaflet.

First Final Leaflet

I made some print outs of it and I corrected some mistakes, as there was a problem with the black ink.

Print outs

After our ‘Refine’ tutorial I became aware of the fact that the screen in my leaflet was not really working. It was not easy to understand it and it didn’t create homogeneity with the following pages.

So I thought to present a Social Network Home page instead.

As I did not want to use images but typography, I wrote a description of the Facebook classic layout.

I then worked out the percentage of aggressive comments in a Homepage using the previous comments that I analyzed.

6 out of 28 comments were not aggressive. So 22 out of 28 comments were actually aggressive and racist. The percentage of this figure was 78% aggressive comments out of 5 posts.

Using Facebook’s Home page font, Lucida Sans, I create a description of the Social Network template using also the percentage of aggressive comments that appear in your Home page.

I then used ‘American Typewriter’ font for the key sentences, as it gives a more classic style. This creates more homogeneity with the board game poster on the other side of the leaflet.

Second Final Leaflet

After all our craftwork, the leaflet looked really professional!

As the paper was really thick, it was quite difficult to fold it perfectly.

Happy with the final artwork, I kept one flyer for myself and I went to  played with my board game!

Smint’s Competition

When I saw the possibility of entering in this competition I was so happy as I was looking to do some extra work in relationship with my studies.

I first had a look at the brief and at the ‘fresh to impress’ campaign.

In the brief there was a resource pack with Smint’s Logos, the font that we had to use, Illustrator and Photoshop files to take inspiration and the template file for the final poster.

I went through Smint UK Facebook profile to see all the previous banners and posters. The style was always the same and I took some notes to help me develop my ideas.

I then did a brainstorm and started sketching the very first ideas.

I focused on the single words ‘fresh’ and ‘impress’ and those are some of my thoughts from my sketchbook.

Smint Sketch

I connected the word ‘impress’ to the Impressionism art movement and the first artist that came to mind was Magritte. As the target of the campaign were young professionals I thought that almost everyone know Magritte’s work, specially ‘Ceci n’est pas une pipe’.

To make everything ‘fresh’ I wanted to redesign the painting using a modern style giving importance to the mint.

Happy with my first idea, I then analyzed my sketchbook and create on Illustrator some of them.

Smint poster 3

Will Smint Poster

Last but not least, I worked on my favorite concept. It came to mind during the night, so I was quite proud of it. I wanted to impress people doing something crazy and at the same time making them think about the poster so they would have to remember it.

”Oh dear, what’s going on there? Why did that fish get stuck in the window to get a mint?”

The poster will interact with the real word and people will use their imagination to create their own story. I think that to impress in the current world we need to see something really crazy, something that motivates our brain to use the left part and work out by itself its own version.

Smint Poster

I was still not sure 100% about which poster to send for the competition as just one for each entrance was allowed. I asked friends’ and designers’ suggestions and some of them did not understand the fish poster, other ones loved it, and some like more the pipe poster.

If I had to follow my heart, I would choose the fish, but Graphic Design is not just following what YOU like but what the people out there like.

I spoke with my tutor to get to a final decision.

fermata-autobus pesce     fermata-autobus copia

I didn’t notice it, but he made me think about the fact that a big pipe could remind a smoking advertisement so some people could ignore it because of that. The fish was crazy enough to be a nice idea.

I checked again the brief really carefully, I made the final poster with some changes and I then entered it into the competition!

I had really good fun doing this project and I thank Smint for that!

Even if I prefer Tic Tacs.

A new business card

Suddenly, one of my friends called me because he needed some help from a graphic designer!

I felt really happy and proud the be able to help him.

He needed a business card for his friend to print out the day after and I had a deadline of 3 hours to help him!

He is working in the construction industry and he needed a business card to give away as he’s currently doing some self employed jobs.

He did have a logo, but we worked on improving it as it was not recent and it needed to be changed.

We started the project from the original business card created from another designer some years ago.

Original design

We had to change the name on the logo, as it was his father’s name. The colors were not really interesting, and I changed a little bit the shapes as there were some small mistakes in the original logo.

We chose to use a business card format as the square was not really working.

I decided to work on making a more modern format, showing dynamics as the building industry involves it.

This is the final result.

The front is clear, it presents the new logo with the basic information and current contact details plus a basic but modern design.

The back uses the same design of the front and shows the main features of his service.

I think that even if we did not have plenty of time we get to a quite nice solution and it was good fun as well!

I CAN draw!

We all had an amazing time with Amanda, we built our confidence in drawing, had a new experience and we found out so many new things about design and about ourselves.

First of all, we started to draw in a two points perspective grid that we built.

2 points perspective

After gaining more confidence, we started to design a city in the same grid.

2 point perspective

And my bitmap dinosaur, a labyrinth…

I admit that I was starting to have fun with perspective!

We also studied the five points perspective.

When we understood how it works, we draw more complicated objects.

We then played with spirals and anamorphic illusions.

The next session was about typography.

I designed some letters in a grid based on the golden section and then I combined them together, to see how they look like and to study their structure.

I chose the B-G combination design and then I draw it into a two and five points prospective grid.

And I draw some buildings inside the letters with Indian ink. I found out that I really love this technique!

Finally, I combined the letters again, this time 3 letters together, G,B and A!

It was now time to have a look at all the work that our group produced.

Group work

I thought that the result was great, nearly everyone said that they were not good at drawing. But in the end, we were so proud and impressed by our work!

We became confident in our drawing skills and we started a new project.

This time we decided to do something more abstract and we worked in a team of 3 people. We combined Chinese, Japanese, Italian, French, English, Malayalam and a lot of more languages using different materials and techniques.

It was certainly an amazing experience drawing with a team on a huge Fabriano’s piece of paper!
